A Trip Down Memory Lane

The other day I was listening to an XM radio station (not sure exactly which one), and they played song after song of mid-90's rock. Isn't it amazing how certain songs make you remember certain memories so vividly? Here are some of the songs that were played:
Progidy: Firestarter
Gin Blossoms: Until I Fall Away
Nirvana: In Bloom
Soundgarden: Black Days
Pearl Jam: Daughter

And then they lost me when they played a Lenny Kravitz tune. That list could only be better by including some old Green Day, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Cranberries, Alice in Chains, and (dare I say it?) Spin Doctors.

If you were making the perfect mid-90's rock compilation -- one that would evoke tons of memories -- what would you put on it? (I'm only asking because I think I'm going to make one myself, and I want you guys to do the brainstorming for me.)

Ahh, good times. Good times.

(For anyone that reads this before 11:30 PM on Wednesday: The Strokes are playing on Leno tonight. And Jeremy Piven is on there, too. Correction: They were on Conan at 12:30 and played "You Only Live Once.")

Alice In Chains would have to be on there, so good choice. I'd probably put "Nutshell," "Down In
A Hole" or "Angry Chair" on.

It would also need Toad the Wet Sprocket; "Something's Always Wrong," "All I Want" or "Are We Afraid" maybe.

Other than that...

"The Sunny Side of the Street" by The Pogues; "Seasons" by Chris Cornell; "Backwater" by Meat Puppets; "Witness" by Screaming Trees; "Self Esteem" by Offspring; "Anna Begins" by Counting Crows; "Yeats' Grave" by The Cranberries; "Little Sister" by Siouxsie & The Banshees; "Nothing Lasts Forever" by Echo & the Bunnymen; "Sweetness Follows" by R.E.M. "Santa Monica" by Everclear; "Lilith-Eve" by Machines of Loving Grace; "Friend Is A Four Letter Word" by Cake; "Go" by Pearl Jam; "Thinking About You" by Radiohead; "Call Me A Dog" by Temple of the Dog...

Yeah. Ok. I did nothing but listen to music, bike and read back then.

Oh, and RIGHT ON for including the Spin Doctors.

Hm. I've been thinking of making a mid-90's compilation myself, but I just don't ever get around to actually doing it.

I'm not sure about all of the songs I would put on it, but I'll list a few:

Radiohead, "Exit Music for a Film" and "Talk Show Host"
Temple of the Dog, "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and "Hunger Strike"
The Cardigans, "Lovefool"
Weezer, "Say It Ain't So"
Pearl Jam, "Jeremy"
The Cranberries, "Dreams" and "Linger"
Silverchair, "Tomorrow"
Bjork, "Isobel"
Spacehog, "In the Meantime"
Spiders, "Female of the Species"
Hum, "Stars"
Blind Melon, "No Rain"

Hmmm, I think I just created my playlist . . .

And Bush, "Glycerine"

And Smashing Pumpkins, "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" HA! Not on your life!

Man, Lauren, I'm gonna be thinking about this until I actually make the compilation. Thanks a lot.

Okay, ONE more:

The Pixies, "Where Is My Mind"

Awww. Sara beat me to the Pixies punch. That's such a great song.

I think the pairing of Radiohead's "Exit Music" and "Let Down" works so perfectly I usually just consider them a single song.

I was afraid to mention Bjork, but since she brought her up: "Bachelorette" is at the top of my list, followed closely by "Joga."

I forgot to mention Smashing Pumpkins, so I pick "Thirty-Three."

And I'm going to be bold and suggest "More Human Than Human" by White Zombie. Because I know everyone else will hate it.

Yes! Awesome. I totally forgot the Screaming Trees (That is a great band name, by the way.) and Toad the Wet Sprocket.

And who sung that song about counting blue cars? Was it Counting Cars? And that reminds me -- Counting Crows.

And I think every Pixies song ever made should be on this compilation. But ESPECIALLY Gigantic. (Technically, I didn't listen to the Pixies until the late '90's in high school. SO they conjure mostly high school memories.)

And good call with the Blind Melon, Spacehog, and I LOVED that Rob Zombie song.

Man, I was thinking of a good one, but I lost it.

Oh, yeah! The Verve. "Lucky Man."

I think "Counting Blue Cars" was by Dishwalla.

Yeah. You're right. Dishwalla.

Hey, scratch those Radiohead songs. I've been thinking about it, and I think the best mid-90's Radiohead song was "High and Dry." That's pretty much what I would call the ultimate example of my alternative rock listening. I think the intro to that song is one of the best ever. EVER.

EVER, huh? I'd disagree just for the sake of disagreeing 'cause it's fun. But I can't think of any other songs right now. Not a one. The brain is consumed with Jungian psychology and The House of Mirth. Yay.

I ALWAYS listen to 43! I love it. But this particular time I think another 33Hz song was on (They play them all the time and I can't stand them.), so I was flippin' around.
