Orson Welles made Citizen Kane when he was 24. Man. To be accomplished at 24. Must be nice. I'm still working on my undergrad.

I know what you mean. I finished my last classes in June. I feel decidedly useless and unaccomplished.

At least I can claim to be taking my cues from nature: I'm sure I've accomplished more than most drones when it comes to education and career development.

Well, and then there's this: How "useful" are we English majors and lit nerds ever going to be?? I mean, maybe someday something we write will touch someone. But will it change something for the better? Will I reach any of the students I will teach to be better people (when that's not exactly in the curriculum) or just to become nerds about lit like me?

Yeah. I've definitely thought about the "useful" factor of an English degree. But you know, I've realized that I'm not big on functionality. I like form over function. Unless we're talking shoes. Then I'm all about function.

(What am I talking about?)
