Thanks to my work, I've gotten much better about the names and locations of modern African nations -- we have a whole department tasked with handling free access for African nations.
My main problem has actually been too much education. I know too much about the ancient world, so the constantly-shifting modern world escapes my notice. It seems silly to learn the contemporary names of places that are still in flux, places that will join Ur and Kerma in the dust soon enough. Sometimes I catch myself staring blankly at maps and wondering why they're missing Nubia and Khurasaan.
